Lent photo project 2020, day 25: listen

Everybody has a pair of these in their ears nowadays, so I don't think we have a listening problem in this country. Back in the old days, last week, for example, when we all walked around the grocery stores, selecting from the all the different types of toilet paper and bleach wipes on the shelves, I often felt like I was the only person in the store without anything in my ears.

Everyone just wandering around, shut up in their own little worlds, not making eye contact, ignoring everything and everybody unless it directly deals with them. Even when they are paying for their stuff, a lot of people can't be bothered to take the earphones out or turn down the volume. Social distancing of a different sort.

What is everyone listening to? Podcasts? Music? We all get into our cars and we turn on the music, our homes are filled with the noise of TV, out in the streets our cars make all sorts of noise.

What is everyone listening to?

"Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper." 1 Kings 19: 11-12

In all the bustle and busyness and all the noise, listen for the voice of God. We can only hear it if we tune out all the rest, if we just take out those earphones and look around, if we just pay attention and focus on Him and His gentle whisper.
