Lent Photo Project Day 9: Teacher

Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching ... (Romans 12:6-7)

When I took a "spiritual gifts inventory" years ago, my top 3 "gifts" were teaching, knowledge, and encouragement. You'd think I was born to be a teacher or something. Yet my few experiences of teaching high school and college did not turn out so well. I was passionate about my topic, and I loved my students dearly ... but it was too emotionally exhausting, and I simply didn't have the temperament to stay with schoolteaching long-term.

It was through teaching, though, that I learned what an important, difficult, not-for-the-faint-of-heart job it truly is. 20+ years as a student didn't teach me that; a few years of teaching did.

Today's photo features my friend P. (a retired teacher!), who is giving Scout and her friend Amelia some pointers as they learn to crochet. Every Wednesday at Wesley, P. and a group of women meet as a ministry to knit and crochet blankets and other items, and to pray, for those who are in need in our community. When I told P. last weekend that Scout is trying to learn to crochet, she invited Scout to join their Wednesday night gatherings.

I'm so thankful that P. is using her teaching gift, her crocheting skills, and her personal example to help these sweet girls gain skills they'll have all their lives. Scout is already looking forward to next Wednesday!
