The website we're using for our prompts is clearly geared toward photographers. Today's word is "tripod." I'm not a photographer; like many non-photographers, I have one camera, and that camera is my phone. My trusty iPhone 5s died a few weeks ago, and, thanks to the low inventory at the local stores during this quarantine season, I was forced to buy a brand-spanking-new iPhone 11.
So, even though I'm not a photographer, I do have a good phone now.
Like any good non-photographer, I do not own a tripod. When I found myself needing to make a video for this Sunday's church service, I had to think creatively about a sturdy stand for my camera/phone. I tried my flimsy music stand, but that didn't work. A book case would have worked, but I'd have had to move it into position, and bookcases are heavy. I finally settled on a piano bench, plus a small cat tree/scratching post. It worked beautifully!
Alas! Our music director called yesterday afternoon and asked if I could re-record it using landscape orientation. I was happy to re-record it, but my "tripod" didn't work so well for holding my sideways phone. We had to add a Baptist hymnal for height, and then I had to stick a napkin in the hymnal because it was a little off-balance.
It still wasn't perfect. As you can see, the final video has beige shag along the bottom edge.
I'm hoping that will be cropped out for the online service on Sunday morning.
In the video, I'm playing an arrangement of the old Fanny J. Crosby hymn, "Blessed Assurance." This one's always been one of my favorites, and I love the joyfulness of this arrangement. Just hearing the music makes me happy. Here's a link to the original (portrait orientation, sans shag) video, if you'd like to hear it too.
Here are the words to the first verse and the chorus, in case you'd like to sing along:
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine;
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.
So, even though I'm not a photographer, I do have a good phone now.

My "tripod." Taken with the old 5s phone. You can see the iPhone 11 propped up top. |

Standing on the shoulders of the Baptist Hymnal so I can play a prelude for our Methodist church. |

Nothing like a bit of beige shag in one's piano video. |
