Sharp

As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. (Proverbs 27:17) There is so much wisdom in these words from Proverbs, but how often do we shy away from someone who would "sharpen" us? How often do we back down, or flare up, in the face of disagreement? How often do we avoid arguing our ideas because argument is conflict, and we hate conflict? How often do we refuse to listen to opposing ideas because we know we're right? Like many people (particularly women, I think), I've been a conflict-avoider for much of my life. I've always been wary of arguing a particular idea because--who knows?--maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I have something to learn. Maybe someone has a better argument, and my position isn't as tenable as I thought. Yes, I'm open-minded that way, which I think is a good thing, but there's also the fear that ... Decorations

I am not much of a holiday decorator. While I wish I had this skill, I must admit that I've never been interested enough in decorating to get good at it. And if I do start thinking about where to put this garland, or those decorative pinecones, or that Christmas candle ... I get overwhelmed. So I just stick Christmasy stuff in different places around the house and call it a day. I'm the same way with decorating in general. We have a lovely suburban home, but there are almost no pictures on the walls because I don't know where to put them. I would love to paint, or add some "wall art," or even rearrange some furniture ... but I feel helpless to know what goes where, so I don't do anything. I could be like most people and try several different ways to see what works best, but that takes time, and honestly? I'd just rather read or play the piano. The walls can wait till another time. I would love to have someone come over and tell me what to do--what color to...

Hard Work

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9) When I started reading Leviticus a couple of weeks ago, I decided to use colored pencils to mark the different types of offerings. The original idea was so I wouldn't feel overwhelmed with them, but it inspired me to do some extra reading on the meanings of the different types of offerings. As I sharpened my colored pencils sometime during Leviticus 1, I had no idea how much of my Bible-study time each morning would be spent ... making boxes and coloring them in. It seemed like so much work! I regretted the commitment several times. I would be so busy coloring that I'd end up having to go back and re-read the entire chapter once I'd finished. But honestly? The chapter was a lot easier to read with the highlights. And even if I wasn't reading the words, I could visually see where something required one...
