Art

My homeschooled kids have had the same art teacher for years. They are four, and that is the minimum number to make a “class.” Some years, they have had other homeschooled kids in their “class,” but for most years, the four of them just enjoy Ms. Denise all to themselves.

She is a wonderful art teacher—having taught art in private schools for 30 odd years, she came to our city to semi-retire. Through the years, she has taught them to work with a lot of different media and they have done all sorts of cool things.

This set below is one of my favorite of their projects. She had them paint self portraits, and this is how each of them expressed themselves.

My pastor tells the story of a lady who was casually taking a walk when she spotted a painting in someone’s trash. Even though she knew nothing about the painting, she could tell that it was a powerful piece. Turns out the painting was a masterpiece, and ended up selling for over a million dollars.

This is what we are—all of us. We are God’s masterpieces, His artwork, but our sins have buried us in the trash. God rescues us, cleans us up. With His gentle touch, He restores us to our finest. We just have to let him.
