Celebrate/Polka Dots

(Written on Monday, Aug. 3, but posted for Sunday's "word of the day")

Hope deferred makes the heart sick,
but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life. (Proverbs 13:12)

It has been a tough year for my girl. She's an extravert who loves learning and being with her friends, so the sudden ending to her school days in March dealt a real blow to her. Even though we have the expected concerns about health--her health, and the health of her school's teachers and staff--it was good to see a big smile on her face this morning as she heard the bus turn into our neighborhood. Soon she was on the bus and on her way to her first day of fifth grade, her first day of school in nearly five months.

When quarantine first started, we all thought the kids would be back at school in a few weeks; most of us didn't imagine that there would be no return to school that spring. Our hopes were deferred ... and then they were no more. So this morning we celebrated the fact that Scout would finally get to go back to school, and we pray that it will be a safe and healthy year for everyone.

She did have a bit of deferred hope this morning, though. The fifth-graders get to sit in the back of the bus, and for three years, she's looked forward to boarding the bus on her first day of fifth grade, walking all the way to the back, and plopping herself down in the very back seat. But with COVID precautions, the first students to board in the morning are to sit in the back, with additional students taking the seats in front of them, so no one has to walk past anyone else. So Scout wasn't able to sit in the back this morning. We warned her last night that this might happen, and she got all most of the tears out then. Still, I felt for her this morning. It's a small thing in the great scheme, but it meant a lot to her. I'm hoping  she'll be able to claim her rightful back seat at some point this year.

In keeping with today's theme, here's a picture of her with her polka-dotted backpack! It's from last year, but she has the same backpack this year. The only difference is that her hair is a little longer, and now she has a brand-new water bottle. Also, my flowers are not nearly as plentiful this year.
