Apples

But the Lord's portion is his people,
    Jacob his allotted heritage.
“He found him in a desert land,
    and in the howling waste of the wilderness;
he encircled him, he cared for him,
    he kept him as the apple of his eye.
Like an eagle that stirs up its nest,
    that flutters over its young,
spreading out its wings, catching them,
    bearing them on its pinions,
the Lord alone guided him,
    no foreign god was with him. (Deut. 32:9-12)

In our Bible-reading plan using the Bible Recap, I finished reading the Torah yesterday morning. I loved the above words from Deuteronomy 32, that image of God caring for his people, protecting them like an eagle protects its young.

This weekend is Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. I decided to celebrate both that and my completion of the Torah by making a traditional Rosh Hashanah dish.

Of course, I had no idea what a traditional Rosh Hashanah dish would be, so I went to Google and found this recipe for honey-apple cake. It was good--not too sweet, and very autumnal with its cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and (of course) apples!

L’Shanah Tovah U’Metukah, dear readers!

Honey apple cake, happily shared with several neighbors and friends.
